Was hoping for a book linking scientific knowledge of how the brain works to spiritual lessons. Kind of a power of positive thinking + science+ bible. But this? Bat. Shiz. Crazy.I stopped reading when author asserts (watered down version here) that the thoughts you have create your life- that this is the reason why you can have identical twins and only one has asthma. Now I believe in god and I believe in science and I believe that our thoughts are more powerful than we might think, but I don’t think some infant’s pattern of thinking gave them asthma. It also runs counter to a strongly held belief of mine, which I’m pretty sure comes fromJesus, that every life matters and is worthy of love. So it seems a little- disrespectful? - to assert that if you are in some way not-typical and perfectly healthy as defined by the western world, then you are not as you COULD be, if only you and your mind would make the right choices and focus on the right things. It’s like- sorry, person with schizophrenia, but this is your prob. Nope. Don’t think so.In fairness, I didn’t finish the book. There were some undertones I didn’t likeFrom the get go, and I was absolutely done with the asthma analogy. I skimmed some of it, and the 21 day challenge might be helpful for some. But I don’t think it’s any different than anything else you will hear is good to do- practice gratitude, choose happiness, focus on turning your thoughts only to helpful, productive things and you will benefit. I thought I was going to enjoy a book about neuroscience research and techniques to increase positive thoughts and happiness in my life. Uhmmm no. I got a scripture filled, disorganized jumble of nonsense. I can’t bring myself to read past chapter 2.My first red flag was when the author wrote “I am a scientist, and if I can’t back up a scientific fact with scripture, I question it’s validity.” I. Just. Can’t. And I’m a Christian but I’ve also studied neuroscience. By the end of chapter 2, the author tried to make the case that we have free will to control our own choices.... including if we have an alcohol addiction or insinuating that positive thinking will help cure AIDS. Let’s just negate all the research that proves that alcoholism is a disease, categorized in the DSM 5, and that someone with the predisposition for the gene has a higher likelihood for developing the disease if exposed to alcohol, because of the reward centers in the brain. Anywho, I’m gonna move on with my life now and throw this book in the trash.
